Event Details

Walmart has recently announced $2 billion commitment to help end hunger in America. Through the “Fighting Hunger Together” initiative, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation will give $250 million in grants to hunger relief organizations and donate more than 1.1 billion pounds of food from Walmart stores, distribution centers and Sam’s Club locations, valued at $1.75 billion.

Greater DC Cares is partnering with Walmart and the HandsOn Network to host 3 projects to fight hunger in Washington, DC on Saturday, September 25th from 9am-12:30pm.  25 Walmart employees will join 75 community volunteers in projects at 3 nonprofit organizations:

 

Capital Area Food Bank

Capital Area Food Bank Mission: The mission of the Capital Area Food Bank is to feed those who suffer from hunger in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area by acquiring food and distributing it through our network of member agencies; and to educate, empower and enlighten the community about the issues of hunger and nutrition.

Volunteers will sort and package food at the Capital Area Food Bank.

 

Food and Friends

219 Riggs Rd, NE, Washington, DC

Food and Friends Mission:  Along with nutrition counseling, Food & Friends prepares, packages and delivers meals and groceries to more than 1,400 people living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-challenging illnesses throughout Washington, DC, 7 counties of Maryland and 7 counties and 6 independent cities in Virginia. Since 1988, Food & Friends has provided food and companionship to our clients, their loved ones and caregivers. 

Volunteers (in teams of 2 or 3) will deliver food to clientele living with HIV/AIDS, Cancer and other life threatening illnesses.  Cars required for delivery.

 

Martha's Table

Martha's Table Mission:  Martha's Table's mission is to help at-risk children, youth, families, and individuals in our community improve their lives by providing educational progarms, food, clothing, and enrichment opportunities.

Volunteers will participate in painting projects at Martha's Table.
